Scanner Types Wrong Characters or Symbols
Why does my scanner type symbols instead of numbers?
No drivers or software needed. ScanAvenger scanners work like a keyboard: connect them and start scanning into any app that accepts typing.
Why it happens
The scanner sends each character the way a US keyboard would type it. If your computer uses another layout, it reads those keys differently.
For example, on a French (AZERTY) keyboard the digits 1 to 0 come out as & é " ' ( - è _ ç à. Other layouts give other symbols.
Match the keyboard language
- Open your model's user manual and find the Language Settings Table.
- Scan the code for the keyboard language your computer uses. That one code is all you need.
- Scan a barcode again to test.
Prefer not to search the manual? Contact us with your model number and keyboard language, and we'll send you the right code.
Still getting wrong characters?
Check which keyboard language is set on the device you scan into, since that's the one the scanner needs to match:
- Windows: Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Mac: System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input.
If you switch between several keyboard languages, the active one at the moment you scan is the one that counts.
Extra digits before USPS tracking numbers
This one isn't a language issue. USPS label barcodes include "420" and the destination ZIP code before the tracking number, and the scanner sends the full barcode by default. Contact us with your model number and we'll help you set it up to send only the tracking number.
