What to Do When Your ScanAvenger Scanner Isn't Scanning
Why isn't my scanner scanning?
No drivers or software needed. ScanAvenger scanners work like a keyboard: connect them and start scanning into any app that accepts typing.
Listen and look when you scan
Press the scan button on a barcode and note what happens. On most models:
- 3 short low beeps: the scanner can't send the code to your device. Go to Reconnect the scanner below.
- 5 short beeps: the battery is low and needs recharging. Go to Charge the scanner below.
- No beep at all: check whether any light turns on or flashes on the scanner. If nothing lights up, start with charging.
- A normal beep, but no text appears: the scanner is reading the code. Go to Check where the text is going below. If the code still doesn't appear, see Check if Storage Mode is on.
Beep patterns can differ slightly between models. Your user manual lists them all.
Charge the scanner
- Plug the USB cable straight into the scanner, not into the charging base, and charge it for at least 20 minutes.
- On the SA1000, SA1100 and SA9300, make sure the ON/OFF switch is pushed fully to ON. These models don't charge while switched off.
- Try scanning again.
If only the red light on top turns on and the scanning light at the front doesn't, the battery is usually the cause too. See Scanner not charging or won't turn on for more checks.
Reconnect the scanner
If you use the USB Dongle, pair the scanner with it again:
- Unplug the USB Dongle.
- Scan the 2.4G Mode barcode:
- Scan the Pair barcode:
- Plug the USB Dongle back in. When the status light turns solid blue, the scanner is connected.
If you use Bluetooth, follow Connect by Bluetooth. Not sure which one you use? See Scanner won't pair or keeps disconnecting.
Check where the text is going
The scanner types like a keyboard, so the code appears wherever your cursor is.
- Open a simple app you can type into, such as Notepad, Notes or Word.
- Click or tap inside it so the cursor is blinking there.
- Scan a barcode.
If the code appears there, the scanner works and the issue is with the field or app you were scanning into. Click or tap the field first, then scan.
Check if Storage Mode is on
If the scanner beeps normally but nothing appears, even in a simple app like Notepad, it may be in Storage Mode. In this mode the scanner saves each scan in its memory instead of sending it to your device. It's made for inventory counts away from the computer.
- Open a simple app such as Notepad or Notes and click inside it.
- To get back the scans saved so far, scan the Data Upload barcode. They're typed into the app. Skip this step if you don't need them.
- Scan the Trigger Upload Mode barcode to go back to normal scanning:
- Scan a barcode to test. It should appear right away.
These two barcodes work on every ScanAvenger model. On the SA9400, the display also shows how many scans are stored.
Some barcodes scan, others don't
- QR codes don't scan: the SA1000, SA3500 and SA3600 read 1D barcodes only, so they can't read QR codes. All other models read both.
- Barcodes on a screen don't scan: turn up the screen brightness and try again.
- A specific barcode won't scan: contact us with your model number, how the scanner is connected, and a photo of the barcode. If it scans but the result looks wrong, tell us what you got and what you expected.
Still not scanning?
Contact us and tell us your model number, what the lights do and how many beeps you hear. A short video of you scanning helps a lot. We may suggest a factory reset, but only after these checks, because a reset erases any custom settings on your scanner.
Letters or symbols appear instead of numbers
The scanner types in English (US) by default. If your computer or device uses a different keyboard language, the characters can come out wrong. Contact us and tell us your keyboard language, and we'll send you the code to match it.
