How to Connect Your ScanAvenger Scanner with the USB Dongle

How does the USB Dongle work?

The USB Dongle is the small wireless receiver that comes with your scanner. Plug it into your computer and the scanner pairs with it automatically, usually within about 30 seconds. It's the default connection, so most scanners work right out of the box.

No drivers or software needed. ScanAvenger scanners work like a keyboard: connect them and start scanning into any app that accepts typing.

What you need

  • Your ScanAvenger scanner, charged. If the battery is low, charge it for at least 20 minutes first.
  • The USB Dongle that came with your scanner.
  • A computer or device with a USB port, such as a Windows PC, Mac or POS system. If it only has USB-C ports, use a USB-C to USB-A adapter.

Connect the scanner

  1. Turn on the scanner by pressing the scan button. On the SA1000, SA1100 and SA9300, first slide the ON/OFF switch to ON.
  2. Plug the USB Dongle into a USB port on your computer.
  3. Wait about 30 seconds. The scanner pairs automatically and the status light turns solid blue.

The status light is on top of most models, above the scan button on the SA1000 and SA1100, and on the side of the SA1200 ring scanner.

Test the connection

  1. Open an app you can type into, such as Notepad, Word or Google Docs.
  2. Click where you want the text to go.
  3. Scan any barcode. The code appears where your cursor is.

If the scanner doesn't connect

Pair the scanner with the dongle again:

  1. Unplug the USB Dongle.
  2. Scan the 2.4G Mode barcode:2.4G Mode configuration barcode for the USB Dongle2.4G Mode
  3. Scan the Pair barcode:Pair with dongle configuration barcodePair with dongle
  4. Plug the USB Dongle back in. When the status light turns solid blue, the scanner is connected.

Switch between the USB Dongle and Bluetooth

The scanner remembers both connections, so you don't need to pair again each time:

  • To go back to Bluetooth, scan the Bluetooth Mode barcode:Bluetooth Mode configuration barcodeBluetooth Mode
  • To go back to the USB Dongle, scan the 2.4G Mode barcode above.

Troubleshooting

The scanner still won't connect

  • Plug the dongle directly into the computer, not into a USB hub or extension cable.
  • Try a different USB port.
  • Charge the scanner for at least 20 minutes, then repeat the steps above.

The connection keeps dropping

Stay within range: up to about 30 m (98 ft) in an open space. Walls and metal shelving shorten it. If the connection continues dropping, repeat the pairing steps above. If the issue persists, click here to get in touch with our support team.

The scanner beeps when I scan, but nothing appears

On most models, 3 short low beeps mean the scanner isn't connected, so reconnect it using the steps above. 5 short beeps mean the battery is empty: charge the scanner for at least 20 minutes and try again.

Letters or symbols appear instead of numbers

The scanner types in English (US) by default. If your computer or device uses a different keyboard language, the characters can come out wrong. Contact us and tell us your keyboard language, and we'll send you the code to match it.

I lost the USB Dongle

Replacement dongles have to come from ScanAvenger. Contact us and we'll help you get a new one. In the meantime, you can connect by Bluetooth.
