Scanner Won't Pair or Keeps Disconnecting
Why won't my scanner connect?
No drivers or software needed. ScanAvenger scanners work like a keyboard: connect them and start scanning into any app that accepts typing.
Which connection are you using?
- USB Dongle: the small wireless receiver plugged into your computer. It's the default connection and doesn't use Bluetooth.
- Bluetooth: no receiver. The scanner appears as ScanAvenger HID in your device's Bluetooth settings.
The two are separate connections, so pairing steps for one don't apply to the other.
Pair again with the USB Dongle
- Unplug the USB Dongle.
- Scan the 2.4G Mode barcode:
- Scan the Pair barcode:
- Plug the USB Dongle back in. When the status light turns solid blue, the scanner is connected.
Pair again by Bluetooth
- On your device, remove ScanAvenger HID from the list of Bluetooth devices, if it's there.
- Scan the Bluetooth Mode barcode:
- Scan the Pair barcode:
- When the status light flashes, select ScanAvenger HID in your device's Bluetooth settings. A solid blue light means it's connected.
Full steps for each device are in Connect by Bluetooth.
If it keeps disconnecting
- Charge the scanner for at least 20 minutes. A low battery can make the connection drop.
- USB Dongle: plug it directly into the computer, not into a USB hub or extension cable, and try another USB port.
- Stay within range: up to about 30 m (98 ft) in an open space. Walls and metal shelving shorten it.
- Bluetooth: remove ScanAvenger HID from your device, turn Bluetooth off and on again, then pair again.
If it still drops, note what the status light does and how many beeps you hear when it happens, and whether it happens after the scanner sat unused or while you're scanning. Then contact us with your model number and those details.
What the status light means
On most models:
- Solid blue: connected.
- Flashing blue: pairing mode, ready to connect.
- Flashing blue or green while you use it: the scanner may be having trouble staying connected. Follow the steps above.
Light patterns vary by model. Some scanners use different colors or patterns from the ones above. For example, some models flash green instead of blue when they are ready to pair by Bluetooth. If your scanner's light behaves differently, check the user manual for your model, or contact us.
The status light is on top of most models, above the scan button on the SA1000 and SA1100, and on the side of the SA1200 ring scanner.
The scanner beeps when I scan, but nothing appears
On most models, 3 short low beeps mean the scanner isn't connected, so reconnect it using the steps above. 5 short beeps mean the battery is empty: charge the scanner for at least 20 minutes and try again.
Still not connecting? Reset the scanner
If nothing above works, a factory reset returns the scanner to its original settings and pairs it again. Use it as a last step: it also erases any custom settings, such as a keyboard language or prefix, so you'll need to set those again afterwards.
- Go to User manuals and click Download next to your scanner model. Not sure which model you have? See Find your model.
- Under Download Manuals, open the reset for the connection you use: Full factory reset Barcodes for Dongle or Full factory reset Barcodes for Bluetooth. The two aren't interchangeable, so pick the one that matches your connection.
- Follow the steps in the file and scan the barcodes in order, straight from your screen. Some codes may not make a sound when scanned. This is normal.
The reset barcodes are different for each model, so always use the file for your own model. If you're not sure, contact us and we'll send you the right one.
